For over four decades Arena has provided thought-provoking and insightful analysis of contemporary life, politics and society. Arena Journal continues to resist the narrowness of much of today’s scholarly publishing. Arena Magazine has just reached its 100th issue and remains one of Australia’s few outlets for alternative and radical thought. We aim to keep giving our readers the kind of critical commentary that is only possible through independent publishing.

We have always been proud of our independence. Our publications depend upon the good will and volunteer work of a wide variety of people. But in the current climate such independence is increasingly difficult to sustain.

It is clear that our present way of life is being challenged as environmental, economic and political systems begin to disintegrate. In the face of a relatively tame and corporatised media landscape, the future depends on publications like ours where alternative perspectives can flourish.

As the very pressures that demand a different way of thinking and living also threaten to shrink the spaces where alternatives can be realised, we ask you to give generously to our ongoing appeal to help fund the production of Arena Magazine and Arena Journal.
